Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates (WZ) continues to represent change and make an impact in the education, awareness and importance of non-confrontational interviewing methodologies. The case of Brendan Dassey v. Michael Dittmann, made popular because of the Netflix series “Making a Murderer” has now been petitioned to the Supreme Court of the United States. In effort to support Dassey’s petition, as well as the underlying issue of juvenile interrogation standards, WZ has contributed to an amicus brief representing Law Enforcement Instructors filed by the well-respected firm, Jenner & Block. Within this brief, the importance of understanding psychological coercion, contamination of a confession and the susceptibility of a subject like Brendan Dassey is discussed as major contributions to false or involuntary confessions. The amicus brief now filed with the SCOTUS, may be considered among other briefs by the American Psychological Association, Professors of Criminal Law, the Juvenile Law Center as well as Prosecutors and others all requesting the high court to review Dassey’s case.
